Hi Greg,
Didn't get back to VT from our whirlwind CCBL tour until 2 a.m., thanks to a delayed starting time at Bourne and Seth Maness taking a perfect game into the eight inning (thus preventing us from getting on the road as early as intended). We had a spectacular time, and I've got many impressions, observations, and questions that I'd like to share with you and your readers in another post, but for now I'll stick to the subject of Harwich.

We too were at Saturday night's game against Y-D (wish I'd known you were there!), sitting in the grandstand just behind home plate on the first-base side, and I thought it was the deadest ballpark I've ever attended anywhere. You mention that the park is very quiet, but I'd say that's an understatement; I've been to libraries that seemed louder and livelier. At one point I caught myself actually whispering to my wife, for no reason other than that it seemed out of place to speak at a normal decibel level.

Even worse is that chain-link fence that surrounds the field. The chain is so thick that it really interferes with the viewing experience, but I couldn't find an unobstructed view anywhere. The CCBL guide states that the chain link has been replaced by netting; maybe that's the plan for the future, but it sure hasn't happened yet.

On the positive side, the playing surface was immaculate, like the fairway of a nice golf course, and Harwich's new uniforms are among my favorites in all of baseball, though in my opinion the mesh spring training-style caps don't work well with the throwback jerseys, pants, and stirrups.

Perhaps my disappointment with Harwich was due in part to our attendance the night before at Eldredge Park in Orleans, which as a baseball experience I'd rank right up with Wrigley and Fenway. And, like your chat with John Leonard's father, part of the fun of that night was sitting on the Wareham side with Brandon Workman's parents. We saw them again at Bourne last night, and I felt their pain as they watched their son get racked.

That Kyle Roller wouldn't look out of place if you inserted him into tonight's starting lineup for the Oakland A's, but that's a subject for another post.

Greg,
I did not realize you are from Seattle. You know Andrew Carraway (Hyannis/Virginia)is pitching for the Everett Aquasox and off to a pretty good start.
