The Bourne Braves have won their first ever Cape Cod Baseball League championship after a 5-1 win in game 2 at Lowell Park in Cotuit.
MVP: Kyle Roller (East Carolina) – Bourne Braves
“Here’s a situation where the Bourne Braves just had more gas in the tank than Cotuit… Great way to finish it and good relief pitching by both teams.” – John Garner, CCBL PR/Broadcast Director

Congratulations to the 2009 Bourne Braves
Go Bourne!
Dynasty starts here!
NOW…Doesn’t the season seem WAY too short?? Suddenly it’s all over.
Congratulations Bourne.
A Brave New World
Bravo to the Braves
What other headlines can we write?
Bourne to be Wild
First Bourne
For next time they win: Bourne Again Champions
@CapeMan The WBZ announcers made a great comment that many perceive the summer to be over when the Cape League season is, when in reality there is still half of August left.
But, as fans it is hard not to have that perception. That’s especially true when you’re off-Cape because a part of the lure of the Cape is missing. The beaches and ice cream are still there, but those nights at the ballpark are gone.
I updated our date countdown for next season. We of course don’t know the official date yet, but I’m guessing they will try to do the Thursday game again next season. 302 days to go!
Congrats, Bourne- well done on the championship.
Listening to the Cotuit guys doing the wrap up and they are going through EVERYONE connected with the organization.
Andrew, it DOES feel like the end of summer- sure, MLB goes on, but the fun of the Cape League is done for another ten months- love the countdown for next year, even if we don’t know the exact date.
Bourne peaked, again, at just the right time.
Ending the season on a 9 game winning streak, the core of players in the 8 wins leading into todays Title victory batted:
Roller.. 0.481
Romero.. 0.414
Klafczynski.. 0.391
Segedin.. 0.333
Campbell.. 0.318
LaRosa.. 0.286
LePage.. 0.280
Woodward.. 0.280
It seemed if one failed, the other picked them up. Roller led the way and a very deserving MVP.
Other than a mere handful of poor starts over the 48 game season, and all the teams had a few, the Braves pitching was solid and the defense made the plays when needed.
It was mentioned in the broadcast the issue of early departures and that these players are given a unique opportunity at the Cape. They didn’t mention injuries in the chatter?
I’m very happy for Bourne, they finally got it! I would say extend the season through August, but most have to return to school next week.
Special kudos to the Bourne pitching staff. Guys like Cantrell, Maness, Billbrough, Munson, Harrold, Wimmers, Poovey, Roth, Phelps, Oberg, Morey, Knight, Dimock all made contributions. The staff was, as a group, solid as a rock and kept the team in games over and over and over again. They are the unsung heros of this march to the championship.
Way to go Bourne!!!
And I inadvertently omitted Morgado. Great job guys!
A sincere congratulations to the 2009 Bourne Braves on their first Cape Baseball League Championship in francise history. They were a talented, and extremely likeable team, and they certainly deserve to be called CCBL Champions. Well Done!
Frank,
being the pitching coach for the Braves this summer I wanted to just say that your words were very encouraging and appreciated. I can tell you that from a coaching stand point I have never been around a bunch of arms with as much talent as these guys have that were as selfless.
Each guy we felt comfortable with on the mound and not one guy acted bigger than another. They all got their work in on and off the mound and were poised to bring the first championship to Bourne.
They were a special group, just like this was a special team. I want to thank all the players on the 2009 team for letting me experience a once in a lifetime baseball opportunity.
As a proud host family, we have had the great opportunity to have two of the Braves stay at our house over the last couple of years. These players are great kids and we have enjoyed sharing the summer with them and their teammates. We will miss making late night dinners and constantly needing to run to the grocery store. We will miss the great friendships that these boys have given our family. We are looking forward to being exhausted again next summer. Anyone contemplating being a host family, it is a great experience! We and our two kids are going to miss LB. Go Braves!
I am so proud of this team and the entire organization! The coaches and players will be heroes in the Town of Bourne for eternity.
It’s over. Congrats Bourne!!!!!!!!
Has anyone listened to the Bourne teamline announcers they were amazing. They did a great job and I want to wish good luck to them.
Tunkel remains a funny word, a Lefko means a funny hat, and a Waldman is another word for a decepticon.
Braves For Life
I would like to thank our coaching staff:
Harvey Shapiro, Josh MacDonald, Jordan Wyckoff, Blake Kangas, the great players, and our loyal fans for an incredible, magical and surreal season. Bryan Morgado…thanks for the quote of the season that I will never forget;-).
Thanks to the Board of Directors, the Interns, the Host Families, and UCT who do so much behind the scenes that is never recognized just to get the game on each day.
Thanks to everyone outside the community rooting for Bourne to win its first championship…you know who you are!
As the summer baseball season slams shut so quickly, know that the recruiting of next year’s team is already underway and we look forward to defending our title in 2010.
PS…Tunkel will ALWAYS be a funny word!
Coach Mac, A pitching staff does not perform like that without leadership at the top.
Congratulations to you for your hard work and management of the greatest set of arms in the Cape this season.
I get a warm feeling these kids just got along 100% and are full of “perspective”
Hats off to Bourne and recruiting a collection of individuals who put team first over any personal goals. The Mark of a Champion!
