Chris Coghlan: NL Rookie of the Year?

Chris Coghlan (Chatham ’05) and the Cape League are featured today in an article on MLB.com. Both Coghlan and Marlins GM Michael Hill had nice things to say about the Cape: Reflecting on his path to the big leagues, Coghlan feels his experience playing for Chatham in the Cape Cod League in 2005 helped launch him in the eyes of big league scouts. “I think definitely if I didn’t perform there I wouldn’t have been a first-rounder. Simple as that,” Coghlan said. “I think that’s because that’s the way it is, you get labeled. I think that’s the way the scouting is. If I didn’t hit (.346) would I have been less of a player? No, I wouldn’t have been. I’d like to think it’s a league that only...

The Waiting Game

“I don’t think there’s any doubt I’m looking forward to getting an opportunity to play,” Posey said. “But I’m just excited to be here. It’s a chance to see how these guys work to become better players. That can only be beneficial to me. It’s good to have a chance to get acclimated here.” - Mercury News, 9/10/09 Buster Posey (Y-D ’06-’07) is still waiting for his chance. Posey Called Up to the Show

Due to Bengie Molina’s recent injury, the Giants have promoted catcher Buster Posey (Y-D ’06-’07) after all. From the Albany Herald: Posey, who Evans says was brought up to replace injured Giants starting catcher Bengie Molina, boarded a flight out of Fresno early Wednesday, then changed planes in Las Vegas before eventually joining the team in Philadelphia, site of the Giants’ three-game series with the National League East-leading Phillies. Posey, according to his grandfather, Jack Tippens, was joined in Philly later in the day by his mother, Traci, his father, Demp, and his wife, Kristin. “Oh, he was real excited,” said Tippens, who spoke to Posey as he waited to change planes in the Las Vegas airport. “He was glad that...

Buster Posey poses a Giant threat to Bengie Molina

Buster Posey (Y-D, ’06-’07) will not get the call to the bigs this season. But, with veteran catcher Bengie Molina facing free agency, it looks like Buster will get his shot next season. Buster was sent directly from Class-A San Jose to Class AAA-Fresno on July 14, 2009. He’s batting .321 with 5 homers and 22 RBIs in 35 games. On August 15, 2008, Buster signed a $6.2 million contract with the Giants. On the Cape, he was a great contributor to the Y-Dynasty. He was an All-Star shortstop in the 2006 season, and was an All-Star catcher in 2007. Posey turned down an invite to the ’07 Team USA National Team to return to Y-D. Commenting on his success, Buster told the Sacramento Bee: “I need to work on everything. … There’s always...
