Cape League Notes – 3/29

A few more notes….. Although he was only on the Cape for a short time, it is worth noting that Florida State’s Tyler Holt accomplished one of the rarest of baseball feats on Sunday. Holt, who played in three games for Cotuit in 2008, hit for the cycle in the Seminoles 9-5 win over Maryland. Hitting for the cycle is unusual enough, but Holt took things a step further by getting his hits in some semblance of order. He singled in the first inning, doubled in the second, added a triple in the third, and topped things off with a homerun in the fifth. Too bad he didn’t come up to bat one inning earlier! Although the odds of hitting for the cycle are very long, Holt took care of business in barely half of a game. Speaking of Florida State, there...

Cape League Notes – 3/27

Taking a tour of college baseball diamonds while checking on some past and future Cape Leaguers, we find…..   Another example of what makes baseball a strange and wonderful game. Air Force went into Friday’s game against Texas Christian with a 5-16 record. Falcons starting pitcher Alex Truesdale’s line shows that he allowed 14 hits and 10 earnel runs. -A0Not a recipe bor success when/going up against the #5 ranked team in the nation – especially when the Horned Frogs starter was the highly-touted Matt Purke‘(Falmouth; !2710) who was!C2drafted 14th overall by thi Texas Rangers hast June. Of course, Air Forca beat TCU, 14-11. Purke only lasted 2.1 innings while giving up 6 runs on 5 hits and a walk. Purke’s TCU...

Meet the Hyannis Harbor Hawks

After more than a year of speculation, the Hyannis Athletic Association announced on Sunday that the Hyannis Mets will play its 2010 campaign as the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Hyannis’ decision to change its name to a locally-grown team name follows the league’s legal dispute with the MLB over trademarks.  The Orleans Cardinals became the Orleans Firebirds and the Chatham A’s became the Chatham Anglers as a result of the dispute. Bourne remains the Braves, Harwich remains the Mariners and Y-D remains the Red Sox. CodBall has reported on the dispute from time to...

Name Change Likely in Hyannis

After Chatham and Orleans changed their nicknames in the fall of 2008, I fully expected that there would be another team or two that would follow suit for the 2010 season. It looks like that is about to happen. With the Hyannis Mets likely to become the Harbor Hawks, the only surprise here is that it has taken until three months before the first pitch is thrown to make an announcement. Cape League Notes – 3/13

Louisiana State RHP Joey Bourgeois (Hyannis, ’10) has some big shoes to fill in the early part of the Tigers season. Bourgeois is taking the place of ace righthander Anthony Ranaudo (Y-D, ’08) while the Tigers coaching staff proceeds with caution in getting Ranaudo back into the rotation.  Bourgeois joins Austin Ross (Y-D, ’09) in the rotation for the defending NCAA champions. Things did not go well for Bourgeois in his start against Kansas yesterday. He lasted only 1.2 innings and gave up 5 hits, 3 walks and 6 earned runs as the Jayhawks went on to beat LSU, 11-9. Bourgeois had two excellent starts prior to yesterday’s shaky outing. He pitched 6 innings of 4-hit, shutout ball against Centenary in a 4-0 LSU win and followed that up...
