Drew Storen Moved to Triple-A

Mike Couzens, long-time friend of CodBall and former Falmouth Commodores broadcaster, tipped us off yesterday that Drew Storen (Cotuit Ketleers ’08) would be promoted to the Washington Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. Sure enough, The Washington Post reported it’s official. While Stephen Strasbourg continues to steal all of the headlines, the Nats have another top prospect quickly rising within its ranks. Couzens told me yesterday by email, “I  remember sitting behind home plate calling games for Falmouth two summers ago and dreading when he would come in the game. He’s got a devastating breaking ball and I’m excited to see him up here at this level.” The night before I received Couzens’ email I had read...

Get your blog on!

Thanks to  Soxy Lady and Joe Gill for inviting CodBall – and the Cape League more broadly — to Boston’s Blogapalooza this Sunday at the Baseball Tavern.  Sadly we are unable to make it this year, but I wanted to draw folks’ attention to the growing blogosphere of sports writing. Blogapalooza is an event where social media and Beantown sports collide. Bloggers, their fans, and Boston Media members will have the opportunity to meet, network, trade social media tips and of course talk sports. CodBall began nearly 4 years ago with the goal of bringing news, opinion, analysis and a platform for fan discussion — all centered on the top summer showcase league for amateur baseball in the country. It’s great to see the Cape included in...

Smoak Gets the Call

ESPN is reporting that the Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of Justin Smoak (Cotuit Kettleers ’06) from the Oklahoma City Redhawks (AAA). Smoak led the Redhawks with a .470 OBP through 15 games. Chris Davis has been optioned to the minors. Listen to our CodBall Conversation with Smoak, which was recorded after his impressive 2006 Cape League season which earned him the Pat Sorenti MVP Award. Smoak batted .286 on the Cape with 11 HRs and 27 RBI. He was voted to the 2006 All-League Team, along with Matt Laporta (YD ’04, Brewster ’06; Cleveland Indians) and Major League prospect Buster Posey (YD ’06-’07; Fresno...

Cape League Notes – 4/20

A few things concerning Team USA, a message for Theo Epstein, and even a couple items pertaining to the Cape League….. College baseball fans might want to tune in to ESPNU this Friday (4/23) to check out the game between Louisiana State and Mississippi. Many scouts wil be on hand to see a likely pitching matchup of LSU’s Anthony Ranaudo (2-0; 3.00 ERA) going up against the Rebels Drew Pomeranz (6-0; 1.38 ERA.) Ranaudo pitched for Y-D in 2008 and was scheduled to return to the Red Sox last year before being shut down because of a heavy workload during the Tigers run to the College World Series. Pomeranz was on Bourne’s roster last year but ended up playing for Team USA. Nice to see the newest member of the New York Mets have some...

Cape League Notes – 4/18

Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing a Kettler in a Kettleers uniform this summer. Oklahoma INF Chad Kettler is one of five players who have recently been released from their contracts by Cotuit. Other players dropped from the roster are David Rollins (LHP, San Jacinto College), Andrew Chafin (LHP, Kent State), Michael Schum (RHP, Wright State) and Adam Smith (INF, Texas A&M). UCLA righthander Gerrit Cole had previously been removed from Cotuit’s roster. What’s this….  someone from Chatham trying to help Orleans?? Elon RHP John Brebbia, who hails from Chatham, will be on the other side of the rivalry when he suits up for the Orleans Firebirds. Brebbia is 1-0 for Elon with a 6.75 ERA. The opposition is hitting .301 off him in 20...
