2010 Preview: Falmouth Commodores
We’re not quite as organized as we were last season so look for our season previews of the CCBL’s 10 teams in no particular order over the course of the coming week or so. Gettin’ excited? * * * The Commodores continue in 2010 with their rich pipeline into Wichita State, Oregon State and Missouri. Somehow Falmouth manages to land All-Star talent each season on the mound and at the plate. The organization has not let up. It is reaching deeper into schools like TCU, Oklahoma State and Florida. Looking over this season’s roster, I’m impressed. I’m also impressed with a couple of other Falmouth Commodore updates. The team’s website is dramatically better this season. And the team has added new lights at Guv Fuller...
Read MorePosey Time
Buster Posey (Y-D ’06-’07) is back in the bigs (according to this tweet by ESPN’s Buster Olney), and this time it looks like he’ll stay there. It’s expected that Posey will immediately be starting at 1st, and that he will get a game or two off per week. Giants fans, and us at CodBall, have been waiting for this moment for a long time. All of us probably thought he’d take the place of Bengie Molina as catcher (after all, Posey is currently throwing out base stealers 44% of the time without any errors). But, Molina’s bat is needed in the lineup, so Posey will be forced to shift to 1st. [Photo via Yahoo!/AP...
Read MoreESPN’s must-sees of summer
College baseball is well represented on ESPN’s list of the top things for baseball things to see this summer. The first item on the chronologically-ordered list is Opening Day for the Cape League. The College World Series is listed as the third stop and The Midnight Sun Game (Alaska Baseball League) is fourth. The Cape League All-Star Game at Fenway Park and the National Baseball Congress World Series are noticeably absent. Would you make any changes to the list?
Read MoreA postcard from the Memphis Redbirds
One of the benefits of writing this blog is that when I travel to cities that support professional baseball teams I have a high likelihood of knowing players on one or more of the rosters. When you write about the Cape Cod Baseball League long enough, you are going to know a few pros and Big Leaguers. That was true last night in Memphis where the St. Louis Cardinals’ Redbirds beat the LA Dodgers’ Albuquerque Isotopes. I remembered the Redbirds’ Mark Hamilton from his time on the Cape with the Falmouth Commodores. He was one of many for Falmouth to come out of Tulane. The first baseman is struggling a bit this season at the plate but it’s great for me to see kids on Cape fields and then suddenly on pro fields. Autozone Park in Memphis...
Read MorePadres Call Up Former Gateman Zawadzki
The San Diego Padres have called up ex-Wareham Gateman Lance Zawadzki from Triple-A Portland and they have placed Everth Cabrera on the 15 day disabled list with a strained hamstring. Zawadzki played in all 44 games for Wareham in 2005. He batted .240 with 2 homeruns and 17 RBI. Here in Ashland, MA., there is some added excitement to Lance getting called up because that happens to be where I reside. My son has known Lance for a number of years and I have followed his baseball exploits from his high school days where he helped lead St. John’s (Shrewsbury) to the Division 1 state championship in his junior year. His college path brought him to Louisiana State, San Diego State and Lee University. After playing parts of four years in the San Diego system,...
