Jeff Frazier Debuts for Tigers

At CodBall we tend to focus on players that go from the Cape to the majors in 1-3 years. However, most players have a good, long minor league career before getting the call. I was watching the Red Sox-Tigers game last night and saw that Jeff Frazier was making his major league debut. The name sounded familiar, but I didn’t think much of it. The 9th inning grand slam by All-Star David Ortiz off All-Star closer Jose Valverde eclipsed all other events in the game. (Ironically, I have both on my fantasy baseball team). The Tigers ended up winning the game 6-5. Frazier scored a run in the game after Tim Wakefield (now the oldest pitcher ever to play for the Red Sox) walked him on and the Tigers intelligently bunted him over to 3rd. This morning, thanks to a blog...

Storen Likely to Close for Nats

Washington Nationals reliever Drew Storen (Cotuit ’08) will likely step into the closer immediately since Matt Capps has been traded to the Minnesota Twins. The Twins are seeking to repeat as American League Central Division winners, since the Wild Card will likely to an Eastern Division team.  Storen has been effective in the setup role with 10 holds and a 2.64 ERA. Some reports say that the Nationals will split the closer role, but most experts agree that Storen is the most qualified for the role. Storen led the Cotuit Kettleers with 5 saves in 2008. The league leader was 2008 Russ Ford Award winner Russell Brewer (Hyannis, Vanderbilt) with 12 saves. Brewer signed with the Colorado Rockies last month and was scheduled to report to the advanced rookie...

More Trouble For Whitecaps

On July 16, the Brewster Whitecaps were rolling along with a 20-8 record. Not only did it look like they would wrap up a playoff berth at a very early date, but it seemd a pretty good bet that the Whitecaps would be a favorite in the playoffs, with a very good chance of delivering the first championship to Brewster since 2000. Fast forward to the present and things don’t look so promising for the Whitecaps. First, Anthony Ranaudo packed up his 3-0 record and 0.00 ERA and left the Cape. A few days later, Mike Palazzone (1-1; 1.67 ERA) departed Brewster. Now we get word from Whitecaps broadcaster Zack Levine that Andrew Gagnon (5-1; 2.15 ERA) has shoulder soreness and will miss his scheduled start on Friday against Wareham. On top of that, Levine is...
