Cal Poly’s Johnson to Play for Firebirds

With the start of the D-1 college baseball season set to begin in five weeks, we are beginning to receive some news and notes from various athletic departments.

One item to cross the desk comes from the folks at Cal Poly who have informed us that RHP Chase Johnson has been invited to play for Orleans this summer. Johnson is a 6’3″, 190 lb. sophomore who hails from Fallbrook, CA.

Johnson was drafted in the 26th round by the Texas Rangers in 2010. While splitting time between starting and the bullpen for Cal Poly as a freshman, Johnson compiled a record of 2-5 with a respectable 3.67 ERA. Righty batters hit just .220 off him.  Johnson pitched in the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League last summer for the champion Corvallis Knights. He compiled 3-1 record to go along with a 2.03 ERA in the regular season and was named the number 10 Major League prospect out of the WCCBL by Baseball America.

We’re starting to see more rosters come out, too. First Cotuit and now Bourne….
