Two things to note immediately:

1) Looks like the early season double headers have been eliminated. I know it was tough on teams and especially the volunteers helping out- just means the season will be more hectic.

2) All Star game back on the Cape- presumably at McKeon. Should be awesome. Will be a shame to miss Fenway, but what the heck.....

While I have the floor I might as well also sell one of my old op-ed pieces. Yesterday MLB announced that the Oakland Anglers (joking) and the Seattle Mariners will open their season with a two-game series in Tokyo. Back in 2003 MLB cancelled this idea due to the start of the war in Iraq. I had written an op-ed about Japanese baseball to celebrate that occasion but it never ran. JapanBall hosts that old opinion piece and you can read it at -- http://www.japanball.com/commentary_shaw.htm

Greg - Didn't mean to come off as sarcastic sycophant ! (did I spell that right ? ) I am an old man and much wiser. My sons and nephews were talented prospects in their own right back in the day. it is different now. Scouts , cross checkers , GMs , scouting directors are just people like you and me except they are paid to evaluate talent. Fact is that most of them are just plain wrong when it comes down to guys like Moran, Wilson, Bryant and many more. It is easy to be right with a guy like Harper, or Bauer. How the hell did they miss Lincecum the first time around ? The scouting world today runs with a wolf pack mentality constantly looking for their opinions on a player to be validated. When something is said, good OR bad, it finds its way into print (like you have done) or is spread around in their small circle and it sticks on a kid like flies on stink. Moran is an example. The kid has a huge leg kick that makes him vulnerable to off speed stuff that he has never seen all year because of the team he plays for , UNC , which scored an average of 12 runs a game ! There . Now its in print ! His arm is hardly a plus arm and he is slow. I'm not picking on him but why don't we read this anywhere about HIM ? You tell me and your readers. How many guys had AWFUL years at the Cape that we haven't read about ? You see Greg - words mean things . It is best to stay positive about a kid. Let the scouts, GMs, etc. read THAT about the great players in this league. They will find plenty of ways to not pay these kids what they are worth.

Stuart...I couldn't agree more with part of what you said. That's what I'm driving at here....it's the process and not the results. I said earlier that Bryant has not changed as a player. That's what I meant when I said, "He’s been awful. So what happened? Since the beginning of June, did his talent evaporate? Is he now a non-prospect? Of course not." Meaning....he's had a bad season but it's not a big deal. The talent is still there.

The only thing I disagree with is when you say, "Bottom line is this, nothing good can come out of these opinions written on these blogs. It only serves to plant seeds in the minds of those who make decisions that will affect these kids careers."

I'm sure an MLB team has come across Codball at some point....but they rely on their scouts/cross checkers/scouting directors/GMs to make their decisions on players. What we say here has no impact on that decision.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I will be more thorough in my writing down the road.

Greg - I am a long time Cape Cod baseball fan and go to many games. I think that what Bobby and Artie are driving at here are a number of things. First is that you can't make an accurate projection of a kid by watching him in a handful of games. You have to watch him over the course of several SEASONS to gauge the pace of his development. For example - I watched both Wilson and Bryant go down four times each in one game and Dane Phillips , who was second in the league in hitting, get two infield hits and a slap single to left. Yet everything I read about the kid is soooooo positive. I saw Bryant hit two lasers on sharp 12/6 curve balls to the third baseman, hit a 15 second major league pop up TO THE FENCE with the bases loaded, and snap his bat off at the handle and hit it 375 feet to the right center field wall. For his day he was 0 - 4 ! I guess if you mix those two days in he was AWFUL because he was 0 - 8 . I saw Wilson blister one to the right fielder and almost end the pitchers career with a missile back to the box, watch the SS take a hit from him and fly out to the fence in dead center in Orleans which was a 434' from home plate. For his efforts that day he was 0 - 4. I haven't seen Colin Moran hit a ball hard in the 70 times he went to the plate this summer. Bottom line is this, nothing good can come out of these opinions written on these blogs. It only serves to plant seeds in the minds of those who make decisions that will affect these kids careers. Even though they may have only seen him 10 times. Perhaps on those days when he was a combined 6 - 40 with 12 K's and not those 10 days when he was 18 - 40 with 5 dingers ,6 doubles , and 15 RBIs against quality top pitchers.
