Cape Leaguer's Lead Texas to Final

by Dave B. in

As is the case every year, the Cape League certainly has a presence in Omaha. Last night, trailing Arizona State by a run entering the bottom of the ninth, Cotuit's Cameron Rupp and Wareham's Connor Rowe hit solo homeruns to power Texas to a 4-3 victory, sending the Longhorns to  the championship round where they will meet Louisiana State. Jason Kipnis (Cotuit '08) singled and later came around to score in the top half of the inning to break a tie and give ASU a 3-2 lead. With one out, Rupp crushed a ball over the batter's backdrop in deep centerfield to tie the game. One out later, Rowe lined a ball over the left field wall to add yet another chapter to Texas' magical postseason story.

Austin Wood (Hyannis '06, '07) picked up the win, allowing three hits and one run in three innings of relief. Cole Green (Wareham '09) started for Texas and pitched a very effective six innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6 and giving up just two runs.

Rupp and Rowe each had two hits in the game. Rowe, batting in the ninth spot in the order, doubled leading off the fifth inning and eventually scored to tie the game at two.

Kipnis was 2 for 3 and scored two runs for ASU. Matt Newman (Orleans '09) also added two hits for the Sun Devils.

# 1 Texas (49-14) and # 3 LSU (54-16) will play a best-of-three series in the Championship Finals starting Monday night. All three games are scheduled for a 7:10 ET start time and will be televised on ESPN.
