The Brewster Whitecaps have posted their 2010 roster. Check it out at: http://www.brewsterwhitecaps.com/roster.htm At a quick glance, I don't see any returning players. Washington State, UC Riverside and Mississippi are sending three players to Brewster. Luke Bard (RHP; Georgia Tech) will be the third Bard brother to play on the Cape, following in the footsteps of Daniel (Wareham '05) and Jared who pitched in four games for Brewster this past season.
There will be more to follow, but here is a look at some of the incoming Whitecaps:
Defending NCAA champion Louisiana State will be sending two lefty pitchers to the Whitecaps. Chris Matulis, armed with a low 90's fastball, won 6 games last spring. Freshman Forrest Garrett will join his LSU teammate in Brewster.
Highly regarded Jake Barrett (RHP; Arizona State) was the 2009 Arizona Player of the Year. An intimidating presence at 6'4", 235 lbs., Barrett will wear number 99 for the Sun Devils. Not sure if that is because he lists Manny Ramirez as his favorite player, or if it is because he was the 99th overall pick in the third round of the '09 MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Colton Murray (RHP; Kansas) played for Pittsfield in the NECBL after compiling a 3.23 ERA in 33 innings of relief for the Jayhawks. Murray was the Kansas Pitcher of the Year in 2007.
Drew Martinez (OF; Memphis) will be expected to put his speed to good use, putting pressure on opposing pitchers and defenses. Martinez' Memphis bio notes that the coaches have the freshman penciled in as the starting centerfielder for the Tigers.
Jeremy Schaffer (C; Tulane) will be expected to add some power to the lineup. In 57 games for the Green Wave, Schaffer hit .311, drove in 56 runs, and was sixth in Conference USA with 14 homeruns.
For a local angle, Franklin Pierce sophomore Mike Dowd is one of four catchers on the 'Caps roster. Dowd is from East Bridgewater, MA. and played his high school ball at Cardinal Spellman. Dowd won't be the only Franklin Pierce player on the Cape in 2010. Raven teammate Joseph Flynn (Plymouth, MA.) will be playing for Wareham.
