The San Diego Padres have called up ex-Wareham Gateman Lance Zawadzki from Triple-A Portland and they have placed Everth Cabrera on the 15 day disabled list with a strained hamstring. Zawadzki played in all 44 games for Wareham in 2005. He batted .240 with 2 homeruns and 17 RBI.
Here in Ashland, MA., there is some added excitement to Lance getting called up because that happens to be where I reside. My son has known Lance for a number of years and I have followed his baseball exploits from his high school days where he helped lead St. John's (Shrewsbury) to the Division 1 state championship in his junior year. His college path brought him to Louisiana State, San Diego State and Lee University. After playing parts of four years in the San Diego system, Zawadzki was expected to be in uniform for the Padres game against Milwaukee last night.
Lance's dad, Corey, starred for the Hyannis Mets in 1980.
In order to make room on the 40-man roster for Zawadzki, the Padres had to make a move which affected another ex-Cape Leaguer and Massachusetts star. They moved Peabody's Matt Antonelli (Falmouth '04, '05) to the 60-day DL. Antonelli suffered a fractured left hamate bone before the start of this season.
