We arrived in Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, this afternoon and by evening we were in the historical Quisqueya Stadium which is home to the Tigres del Licey and the Leones del Escogido.
Licey, widely considered the Yankees of the Dominican League, are surprisingly in last place. In a last versus first matchup tonight they took on and defeated (6-5) the league leaders, the Eastern Stars of San Pedro de Macoris.
You would have thought this was the World Series. I have seen and heard the passion of these Latino fans on televsion but it is another thing to experience the noise and enthusiasm up close.
Jake Fox of the Oakland A's hit back to back homeruns to left field to lead the Tigers over the Eastern Stars, who last Friday fired their manager, former Major Leaguer Bryan Harper. The Tigers quickly hired Harper and he got his revenge tonight.
Cape fans would love the Dominican League. I sat with scouts for the Cleveland Indians tonight and had an opportunity to hear them dissect the play of these pro prospects. You won't easily forget the love of baseball you see in these fans.
I will post some video in the morning.
